Nested Realities

Animation

2021

When an image of an object is perceived, the readings of the image and its contents are always associated with where that object is placed, as contexts determine the scale and function of these objects. The project takes on a set of ambiguous objects that were developed as a design language throughout Peter Testa’s vertical studio at SCI-Arc. They represent a set of architectural possibilities that do not have a particular scale, program, or orientation. Depending on their context, they can be read as objects within a city’s urban fabric, buildings, architectural elements, or furniture pieces. The translucency of the objects gives them ambiguity, lightness, and luminosity. Part of the objects’ innate qualities is their tendency to be read differently when seen from different points of view. Reusing the same assets in the composition across multiple scales creates nested realities
